Red Coral Is a Skeleton, Not a Crystal

Why red coral belongs in a jewellery box and still is not a mineral gem, how to tell a branch from a pressed powder, and what to ask about origin.

Red Coral Is a Skeleton, Not a Crystal

In a Navratna set, red coral sits beside ruby, pearl and sapphire as if they were one kind of thing. They are not. Ruby is a crystal of corundum. A pearl is nacre. Red coral is the hard skeleton of a marine animal, built from calcium carbonate. Calling all of them gems is a custom of jewellery. It is not a statement that they formed the same way.

How the branch grows

Coral polyps, small animals, live in colonies. Some species deposit a hard skeleton. The red and pink colours people know from jewellery come from particular species, often in the genus Corallium, living in deeper water. The colour is in the skeleton. It is not a dye floated on afterwards, when the coral is natural and untreated.

The piece a jeweller cuts may be a section of a branch. You can sometimes see a faint lengthwise structure. A cabochon or a round bead is that skeleton, sawn and polished. It is not found as a ready-made bead on the sea floor.

What is sold in its place

Because natural red coral is limited, the tray may contain other things:

Dyed shell or dyed stone, coloured to look red.

Glass or plastic, which can look even and bright.

Reconstructed coral, powder and fragments pressed with a binder. It can show a grainy, unnatural pattern under magnification.

White coral dyed red.

None of these is shameful if the label says what it is. The problem is a dyed bead sold as a natural branch. Ask. If the price is far below every other red bead in the market, ask again. A laboratory can identify coral and can often see treatment. For a costly piece, that report is worth more than a story about the sea.

Trade and scarcity

Some red coral species are under trade restrictions. Rules change, and they are not the same in every country. A buyer does not need to become a lawyer. A buyer does need a seller who can say where the material came from and whether it is natural branch coral or something else. “From the ocean” fits a shell, a pearl, a fish bone and a piece of plastic washed ashore. It is not an identification.

Care

Coral is much softer than ruby. It will scratch against a sapphire in the same box. Perfume and acid mark it. Wipe it. Do not soak it. A string of coral beads should be restrung when the thread frays, before a bead is lost.

The traditional place

In Indian tradition, red coral is associated with Mars. People ask for it for that reason. The tradition can be stated. It does not change the skeleton into a crystal, and it does not prove an effect on a person’s life. The honest sale is a described material: natural coral, dyed coral, or not coral, with a weight and a price.
