Larimar Is Blue Pectolite, Not a Stone from Atlantis

The blue and white stone is pectolite from the Dominican Republic. The Atlantis story is a modern tale. The mineral is real.

Larimar Is Blue Pectolite, Not a Stone from Atlantis

Larimar is the trade name for a blue pectolite found in the Dominican Republic, in the Barahona region. The white veins in the blue can look like surf. That look is why people connect it to the sea. The connection is visual. It is a fair way to describe a colour. It is not a birthplace.

The story that arrived later

You will read that larimar is a stone of Atlantis. Atlantis, as a lost civilisation that manufactured gemstones, is not a finding of geology. The stone is volcanic and marine in the ordinary sense that the island's rocks are. Enjoy the blue. Leave the lost city off the bill.

Hardness is modest, around 4.5 to 5. It can scratch, and it does not love acids, perfume or a long bath. A simple pendant on a light chain is the design that suits it. A daily bangle that hits desks will cloud and chip.

What to ask

Ask for the name pectolite or larimar in writing, and ask whether the colour is natural. A dyed blue stone can imitate the palette. It cannot imitate a careful answer. Peace, love and harmony on a card are wishes. They are not effects the shop can promise.
