The Glow in Moonstone Comes from Layers, Not Moonbeams

Moonstone is a feldspar. The blue-white sheen is adularescence. Old stories about solidified moonlight are legends.

The Glow in Moonstone Comes from Layers, Not Moonbeams

A fine moonstone looks as if a light is moving inside it. Turn the cabochon and the glow slides. That effect has a name: adularescence. It comes from very thin layers in a feldspar, which scatter light. It does not come from a moonbeam that froze.

Where it is found

Moonstone is associated with Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar and Myanmar, among other places. June appears on some birthstone lists. A list is a custom. It is not a rule that a person born in June must wear the stone. Ancient tellings that the gem was solidified moonlight are legends. They are worth knowing as stories. They are not a description of the mine.

How to wear a simple one

A single oval cabochon on a fine chain shows the sheen better than a crowd of beads. The stone is not as hard as sapphire. Keep it from knocks and from a jumble of harder gems. If a seller says the glow is paint or foil under a colourless top, you are looking at a different object. Ask to see the light move as you tilt the stone.

Calm, intuition and new beginnings are meanings people like. They belong in conversation. They do not belong in a sentence that says the stone will do those things for you.
